FAQs

  • Currently, we only allow one laptop per pre-order, but there is no limit on the number of pre-orders per account. Once a configuration is in stock, you can add up to five laptops per order. If you need more or have special requests, please contact us through our support form and we’ll reach out to you.
  • Yes! If you ever need more performance in the future, you can upgrade to a new Framework Laptop 16 Mainboard with a new CPU on it. We publish step by step guides you can follow to do the upgrade yourself.
  • WiFi 6E is the latest standards that adds a new 6GHz frequency band. This band allows for even higher throughput and is less congested than existing WiFi bands. You'll need a WiFi 6E compatible wireless network to get maximum performance, but the card is compatible with existing 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi 6 and older networks.

FAQs

  • Yes! The Framework Laptop 16 is fully upgradeable, so you can easily add more memory or storage at any point in the future if you need to. We sell these modules in the Framework Marketplace, but you can also pick up compatible modules elsewhere. We publish step by step guides you can follow to do the upgrade yourself.
  • Framework Laptop 16 supports two slots of DDR5 SO-DIMM memory at the recommended native DDR5-5600 speed, with a maximum capacity of up to 96GB. While memory that meets that standard should work, the memory we sell in the Framework Marketplace is tested for compatibility. We recommend avoiding XMP DDR5.

FAQs

  • The amount of storage space you need depends on your use cases, but 1TB is the most popular selection. If you ever need more space in the future, you can add a secondary storage drive or upgrade your primary storage drive.
  • SN850X is Western Digital's top-end SSD, using NVMe Gen4 to support an incredible 7,300MB/s maximum read throughput. SN770 is a DRAM-less SSD that uses NVMe Gen4 for up to 4,000MB/s with great power efficiency. SN7100 is also DRAM-less and uses the PCIe Gen4 interface to deliver up to 7,250MB/s read speed. SN810 is an OEM (non-retail) drive similar in capability to SN850X, and SN740 is an OEM drive with similar capabilities to SN770. The configurator may show different compatible SSD models depending on stock availability.
  • There are two SSD sockets within the Framework Laptop 16. The primary socket is compatible with M.2 2280-sized NVMe SSDs while the secondary socket is compatible with M.2 2230-sized NVMe SSDs. We have drives from 250GB up to 4TB available in the Framework Marketplace. There are also drives ranging from 128GB to 8TB available elsewhere. While drives from other brands should work, we've focused our compatibility testing on Western Digital's SN740 and SN810 SSDs.
  • Framework Laptop 16 can boot off of either storage socket, so both are optional. You can populate both at the same time, but note that there are height limitations if using double-sided SSDs. Check the Knowledge Base article here for more information.

The Expansion Bay Shell is the default Expansion Bay Module that provides cooling to the system, and has an empty card area for accessories.
  • Yes! If you ever need more graphics performance in the future or if you purchase your Framework Laptop 16 with only an Expansion Bay Shell, you can upgrade to a new Graphics Module with a new GPU installed. We publish step-by-step guides you can follow to perform the upgrade yourself.

FAQs

  • All Framework Laptop 16 keyboards are backlit and have 1.5mm key travel. They're designed for flexibility and performance, supporting NKRO and leveraging open source QMK firmware on a Raspberry Pi RP2040 microcontroller. The keycaps are made from 30% post-consumer recycled plastics and use a water-based paint process to minimize environmental impact.
  • Yes, you can use hotkeys or QMK-compatible utilities to cycle through lighting effects or create custom effects.

FAQs

  • While you can order as many input modules as you'd like, at one time, the Framework Laptop 16 can utilize 1 keyboard + 2 small input modules or 1 keyboard + 1 medium input module.

You need to select 2 Spacers or 1 Medium Input Module to configure your laptop. Top row modules and their positions can be swapped at any time. The bottom row cannot be customized with other modules and must use the default Touchpad Module and 2 aluminum Touchpad Spacers. You will have the option to add extra modules later.

FAQs

  • Framework Laptop 16 supports USB-C power adapters up to 240W. We recommend at least a 180W power adapter if using a Graphics Module, and at least a 100W power adapter if not. Note that power adapters above 100W need to support USB-PD 3.1, also known as EPR.

FAQs

  • Framework Expansion Cards allow you to customize the ports and functionality of the Framework Laptop 16. Unlike other notebooks that require adapters and dongles to get to the ports you need, you can select the ones you want at order time and change them whenever you’d like. The Framework Laptop 16 supports six simultaneous Expansion Cards, with three on each side. You can select up to six USB-A, USB-C, HDMI, DisplayPort, MicroSD, Ethernet, Audio, 1 TB storage, or 250 GB storage cards to fit your needs.
  • The Framework Laptop 16 charges over USB-C from the back four Expansion Card bays. We suggest configuring with at least one USB-C Expansion Card, since it is difficult to directly plug into the recessed USB-C receptacle that is inside the bay.
  • Yes, if you plan to use wired 3.5mm headphones, you will need an Audio Expansion Card. You can also use Bluetooth headphones or USB headphones without an Audio Expansion Card.
  • You can, but we don't recommend it. There are six Expansion Card slots on the Framework Laptop 16, so we suggest you have one for each.
expand_more
Each card can be used in any of the 6 Expansion Card bays on the Framework 16 Laptop.

We suggest ordering 6 or more Expansion Cards. At least one Expansion Card should be USB-C to charge the laptop, and if an auxiliary audio/headphone jack is needed, an Audio Expansion Card, as there is no built-in jack with the Framework Laptop 16.
